Bill and Monica Griffin Gala

Copeland ASC started this competition in the early 1990’s in recognition of the contribution of Bill and Monica Griffin (both now deceased) to competitive swimming - not only in the Whitehaven/Egremont area but also in Cumbria and nationally. The gala is usually held in May of each year and is open to 9 to 12 year old swimmers. The gala was designed as a ‘sprint’ gala specifically to encourage young swimmers and to give them experience of a ‘quality’competition; it is now a popular fixture in the Cumbrian swimming calendar.

The 2010 event will be held on Saturday May 8th and will be the 16th time this competition has been held, and again will be licensed by the ASA North West Region at Level 4. The major benefit is that all of the swimmers will have their times recorded on the ASA’s computerised ranking/results system and will enable them to see their performance relative to all others in their age group either nationally, regionally, by county or by club. A Level 4 meet is designed for those swimmers who are just beginning to enter individual, open competition – exactly the reason that the Griffin Gala was set up in the first place.
